Metlifecare and the Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trust have celebrated their 30-year joint venture with the completion of 43 new independent living villas in the central city.
The $23 million extended development between Carroll and Ngata streets has been built by local firm Humphries Construction on a 1.2-hectare site owned by the trust, and developed and managed by Metlifecare.
The latest development is a great example of bringing together the expertise and knowledge from both partners in pursuit of a beneficial outcome, not only for both parties but importantly, for the people of Manawatū.
Planning for the new villas began before the pandemic, with the first ground turned in September 2021. The completed village brings the tally of independent-living villas to 92.
The existing community centre, café and new library had been recently refurbished to enhance shared facilities for people from the extended village, who could connect with the mature part of the cluster across a raised pedestrian crossing on Carroll St.
Mayor Grant smith said the “tremendous investment” so close to the central business district showed real confidence in challenging financial times.
The official opening on 23 July 2024 was attended by Liz Mellish, Amokura (Chairman) of Te Kāhui o Hūnuku Whenua (Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trust), Manutaki (Trustees), kaimahi o Te Rahi o Hīkoikoi, Metlifecare CEO, Staff and Development Committee. Three kōwai were planted by Earl Gasparich, CEO,Metlifecare, Liz Mellish and Mayor Grant Smith that will attract ngā manu and enhance the surroundings for residents of the villas. A great occassion for our Trusts and joint venture partners Metlifecare.
