A resident of Lower Hutt, Richard is married with two adult daughters.

Richard is a current Trustee of the Wellington Tenths Trust. His father Richard (Dick) Te One was a Tenths Trustee and his uncle, Mark Te One, served on both the Tenths and Palmerston North Māori Reserve Trusts for many years.  Richard is employed by Hīkoikoi Management Limited (the Trusts’ management company) in a relationship liaison role.

Richard has been self-employed in his own gardening business and spent 13 years working in the public health sector. Elected to the Sacred Heart College Lower Hutt Board of Trustees in 2013 Richard has been the board Chairman since 2018.

Richard is also a musician who has played professionally for nearly 40 years in New Zealand and internationally, and he continues to play locally in various bands.
