Toi Rāranga Installed in Waitohi - Johnsonville Community Hub

Wellington City Council recently commissioned a site-specific artwork, ‘Whetūrangi’, for the new community space, Waitohi, in Johnsonville.

Our Te Roopu Raranga o Manaia collaborated with Maureen Lander in creating this beautiful artwork.

‘Whetūrangi’, referring to the starry sky, comprises of 48 woven harakeke whetū (stars) which stretch across a large internal wall at Waitohi.  The size and shape of every whetū is similar, however each kaiwhatu (maker’s) individual style and creativity can be seen in their weaving.

Their creation evolved over several months and was unveiled on 12 September 2020.
